Knee and hip orthoses — how to choose
Knee and hip orthoses are used to prevent problems, for rehabilitation after operations and injuries and to relieve chronic pain. Below we explain how to choose the design and rigidity suited to your situation.
Intended use
Knee orthoses are used for sprains and ligament tears, meniscus damage, arthrosis and during post-operative rehabilitation, as well as in sport where the knee is under heavy load. Hip orthoses are usually used after hip operations or in joint instability.
What to look for
- Rigidity — an elastic support for light support and warmth; a knee brace with side splints for firmer stabilisation; an orthosis with an adjustable range of movement after operations.
- Purpose of use — everyday support, sport or post-operative fixation.
- Size — usually determined by the knee or hip circumference; the size chart is in the product description.
Quality and support
All knee and hip orthoses are CE-marked medical devices. If you are unsure about the suitable rigidity, our specialists will gladly help with the choice.
Frequently asked questions
Which knee orthosis suits sport?
For sport an elastic knee support or an orthosis with side splints is usually chosen, stabilising the joint while still allowing movement. After a serious injury, the type of orthosis should be agreed with a doctor.
What is the difference between an elastic support and a knee brace with splints?
An elastic support provides light support, compression and warmth, while a brace with splints limits movement and provides firmer stabilisation for more serious problems.
How do I determine the right size?
The size of a knee orthosis is determined by the knee or hip circumference at the indicated point. The size chart for each model is given in the product description.
