Crutches, walking sticks and other aids are used to partly offload an injured or weak leg and to carry out everyday tasks more safely. The right aid depends on the degree of support needed and the user’s stability.

Choosing by the support needed

For light support and balance, a walking stick suits. For greater offloading of the leg after injuries, crutches are used. For stability and safe support with both hands there are walking frames, and for active movement with wheels and the option to rest, rollators. For people with significant mobility impairments there are wheelchairs.

What to look for

  • Degree of support — from light support for balance to full offloading of the leg.
  • Height adjustment — most aids adjust to the user’s height.
  • Maximum load and weight — aluminium models are lighter.
